The future of WordPress is social

Buddypress will hopefully transform WordPress MU to a free and open source social network platform, leaving Facebook and other commercially driven projects behind. Who really needs all the ads, the annoying terror of meaningless applications and the insane end user rules at Facebook?

According to Matt Mullenweg at Photo Matt the Automattic team is incorporating Buddypress into WordPress MU, creating a powerful platform for blogging and social networking.

With the WordPress open standard we anticipate that nice-to-have widgets and plugins also will be developed and awailable from the Buddypress version. Why do I believe this is a good idea? Because we want to communicate and share and collaborate with friends and colleagues in the easiest possible way. They say the future of internet is social. I say it has always been social, because people are. We`ve just not had the right tools for developing it. Until recently.

WordPress has proven itself as the most user friendly advanced blogger-tool around, and the guys and dolls at Automattic has so far proven to be a creative bunch when it comes to developing fruitful features to the WordPress platform.

So we`re waiting:) Because content wants to be free, and we don`t like to commercialize our friends and contacts. Or as Mullenweg says to TechCrunch:

The world doesn’t need another social network, it needs a thousand networks that let you own your data and interconnect using open standards. We invest countless hours giving our data to networks like MySpace, essentially sharecropping on their land for the privilege of being able to connect to our friends. It’s our friends, our time, our connections, our data — it should be our software.
